Built for Kentucky Summers as Much as Winters
Spray foam insulation in Bowling Green does a different job than it does up north. Bowling Green averages about 41 days a year at 90°F or hotter and roughly 47.5 inches of precipitation, with only around 8 inches of snow. Summer humidity, attic heat and damp crawl spaces drive most of the calls we get. We are Spray Foam Insulation Bowling Green, and we insulate and air seal attics, crawl spaces, walls and metal buildings across Warren County and the towns around it.
Bowling Green's housing
Bowling Green grew from 58,067 residents in 2010 to 72,294 in 2020, a 24.5% jump. The median home was built in 1991, and about 35% of homes were added between 2000 and 2019. That leaves a lot of 1960s to 1980s brick ranches with thin, settled attic insulation, and a lot of newer homes with ductwork in the attic and bonus rooms over the garage that never cool down in July.
What Kentucky's code calls for
Kentucky's residential code, in effect since August 3, 2019, uses the 2009 IECC for energy. The whole state is in Climate Zone 4, and the prescriptive values are R-38 for ceilings, R-13 for wood-frame walls, R-19 for floors and R-13 (or R-10 continuous) for crawl space and basement walls, with a 7 ACH50 air leakage limit or a visual inspection option. For existing homes, the Department of Energy suggests R-60 in an uninsulated Zone 4 attic, or about R-49 added over 3 to 4 inches.
Closed cell vs open cell
Closed-cell foam is rigid and dense, about R-5 to R-7 per inch, and slows moisture as well as air. It is what we use on crawl space walls, rim joists and metal buildings. Open-cell foam is soft, about R-3.5 to R-3.7 per inch, fills odd cavities and costs less. It suits roof decks over attics with ductwork and wall cavities that stay dry. The Department of Energy says open-cell foam is not recommended below ground, so it does not go on crawl space or basement walls.
Spray foam insulation cost
HomeGuide lists installed spray foam at about $1.50 to $5.00 per square foot: $1.50 to $3.50 for open cell and $3.00 to $5.00 for closed cell. Crawl space encapsulation runs $3,000 to $15,000 in HomeGuide's guide, and a typical attic insulation job about $1,000 to $2,700. Many small jobs have a minimum around $1,000 to $2,000. Size, thickness, access and prep set your price, and the written estimate we hand you is the price.
Comparing spray foam insulation contractors
Whether you are looking at spray foam insulation companies near me or general insulation contractors, ask each to write down the foam type, thickness and R-value for every area, how they handle crawl space moisture, what gets sealed first, and how long you need to stay out while the foam cures. Good insulation companies put that on paper. So do we. Get a free estimate
Common Questions
What are the negatives of spray foam insulation?
It costs more per square foot than blown-in or batts, it is hard to remove once installed, and a bad install can smell or pull away. It can also hide roof or plumbing leaks. We use foam where it solves a real problem, follow the maker's lift thickness and ventilation rules, and fix leaks before we spray.
How much does spray foam insulation cost in Bowling Green?
National guides list about $1.50 to $5.00 per square foot installed. HomeGuide puts a whole house at $8,000 to $20,000 and spray foam in a crawl space at $2,000 to $4,000. We give you a written price after measuring.
Should I encapsulate my crawl space in Kentucky?
Many vented crawl spaces here get damp in summer, when humid outside air meets cooler surfaces. Sealing the vents, laying a heavy ground cover and insulating the walls with closed-cell foam can keep it drier. We check drainage and standing water first.
How much attic insulation do I need in Bowling Green?
Kentucky's code lists R-38 for ceilings in new homes. For existing attics, the Department of Energy suggests R-60 if bare, or about R-49 added over 3 to 4 inches. In practice, many attics here have far less than either.
Open cell or closed cell for my attic?
If you are insulating the roof deck so ductwork sits in a conditioned attic, open cell is common and costs less. Closed cell makes more sense where moisture or limited depth is a concern. On the attic floor, sealing plus blown-in is usually the better value.
How long do I need to stay out after spray foam?
Plan on staying out of the work area during spraying and for the re-entry time the manufacturer lists, often about a day. Crawl space and blown-in jobs are usually less disruptive. We tell you the timing before we schedule.
